Or so says every sign posted in the year 1984. This intriguing novel, based on George Orwell's thoughts of the future in 1949, is a breathtaking and believable novel that will keep you guessing from the very first page. The book is about Winston Smith, a middle aged man who thinks that there's something suspicious about Big Brother and the world he lives in. He wants answers for why people vanish during the night, why he must change any documents that show Big Brother saying something wrong, and why every action or thought you have is being monitered by either a telescreen or the Thought Police. Then with those answers, he wants to know how to stop it and make the world free for thoughts of their own and the truth.

............Why is this book Outstanding???...............
There are several reasons why I would call this book outstanding but here are the top three:
One:
The story is very original. From the start you see that this book is very different from other books you may have read. I think that the ideas behind the story were very creative such as the Thought Police who can arrest you for thinking bad things about Big Brother or the departments burning history and then changing it to be whatever they wanted it to be. Also, some of his ideas bring a chill down your spine, such as families being turned against eachother to survive. "It was almost normal for people over thirty to be frightened by their own children. And with good reason, for hardly a week passed in which the Times did not carry a paragraph describing how some eavesdropping little sneak had overheard some comprimising remark and denounced his parents to the Thought Police." (Orwell 24)
Two:
It is thought provoking. I found that while reading this book, many questions came to me such as what could the future be like and could this really happen today? A book that can get the reader to question life and human nature is something that I feel is outstanding. I especially find the topics of the telescreens very interesting. They reminded me of life today with surveillance cameras and the announcements that we have at school. While at this point they are used for good things such as catching criminals and telling schools about important news, they could one day be used to spy on us or tell us what to do.
Three:
There are many twists, making the book exciting. There are some instances in which little things that seem insignificant actually foreshadow to bigger events later on. For example, in Chapter 2 part 4 Winston and Jane find a rat in their secret place. Winston states "Of all the horrors-a rat" (Orwell 144) which shows Winston's great fear of rats. To find out the twist though, you have to read the book. Also, characters are very unpredictable and just when you think you know them they surprise you, which is always good in literature to keep your reader's attention.

....................Would I recommend this book??....................
Yes, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good science fiction story or who ever wonders what the future may hold. I do have to caution however, that this book contains a pretty confusing plot and may be hard to follow unless your an advanced reader.

I would give this book 2 out of 3 stars.I think that it showed great potential and a wonderful storyline. However, the story drags and points and often repeats itself. It's still not a waste of time though and I recommend reading it at least once.
